abstract |
A method of gaethanol decomposition of PET is disclosed wherein a source comprising PET is reacted with ethanol and recovers ethylene glycol and aromatic diethyl esters such as diethyl isophthalate and / or diethyl terephthalate. Terpolymers comprising PET or terephthalate monomers and ethylene glycol monomers are reacted with ethanol and ethanol, diethyl terephthalate, ethylene glycol and optionally diethyl isophthalate are recovered. The recovered diethyl component can be subjected to liquid phase oxidation to produce an aromatic carboxylic acid. Acetic acid can also be prepared through liquid phase oxidation of the recovered diethyl component. Aromatic carboxylic acids can be used to form the polymer. |
