Embodiments of the invention are directed to an improved apparatus for sensing infrared radiation having up-conversion that provides an output of electromagnetic radiation having a wavelength shorter than incident infrared radiation, such as visible light. The apparatus includes an anode, a hole blocking layer separating the infrared sensing layer from the anode, an organic light emitting layer separated from the anode by the infrared sensing layer, and a cathode. In the hole blocking layer, when the potential is applied between the anode and the cathode, the organic light emitting layer generates electromagnetic radiation only when the infrared sensing layer is exposed to infrared radiation. |
