abstract The present invention relates to the use of peptides comprising methionine residues to enhance the effect of oxidative stress on human skin. Short polypeptides containing methionine oxide at the C-terminus have been shown to inhibit the production of sunburn cells and upregulate methionine sulfoxide reductase in living skin models. The present invention relates to cosmetically acceptable compositions and methods of using the polypeptides. The oxidized peptide can restore the oxidized α 1 -antitrypsin and, in turn, inhibit the degradation of connective tissue by elastase. Such effects can have a wide range of branching, including, for example, repairing sun damaged skin and treating emphysema.
