Interferometer Force Sensor For Surgical Instruments |
abstract |
The surgical instrument system according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a surgical instrument and an interferometry system optically coupled to the surgical instrument. The surgical tool includes a body portion, a sensor portion at least attached to or embedded in the body portion and a surgical portion at least attached to or embedded in an opposing end from the body portion of the sensor portion. The sensor unit includes an interferometric optical sensor that defines a reference distance that changes in response to either one of the force or torque when at least one of the force or torque is applied to the operating portion of the surgical instrument. |
