abstract As a cylinder liner 1 of a reciprocating engine, the cylinder liner 1 has an inner surface 3 which serves as an operating surface 4 for the piston rings 5, the operating surface 4 having an upper portion ( U) and lower part (L). The upper part U comprises at least the top dead center region of the uppermost piston ring 5. Only the upper portion U of the working surface 4 is provided with a coating 7 of a metal matrix composite reinforced with ceramic particles.
