The present invention provides a novel 7β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase obtainable from bacteria of the genus Collinsella , in particular strain Collinsella aerofaciens , a sequence encoding said enzyme, the production of said enzyme. Methods and their use in enzymatic conversion of cholic acid compounds, in particular in the production of ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCS). The present invention also relates to a novel method of synthesizing UDCS. |
