abstract The present invention reacts DNAZ with bromoacetyl bromide and boron trifluoride etherate in a solvent to prepare a mixture comprising a salt of N- (bromoacetyl) -3,3-dinitroazetidine (ABDNAZ) and DNAZ. To generate and synthesize N- (bromoacetyl) -3,3-dinitroazetidine (ABDNAZ). Water and an additional volume of solvent are added to the mixture to form an organic phase comprising ABDNAZ and an aqueous phase comprising a salt of DNAZ. The organic phase and the aqueous phase are separated to produce an aqueous phase comprising an ABDNAZ / solvent solution comprising ABDNAZ and a salt of DNAZ. A nonsolvent is added to the ABDNAZ / solvent solution to produce an ABDNAZ / solvent / nonsolvent mixture. Thereafter, N- (bromoacetyl) -3,3-dinitroazetidine (ABDNAZ) is recovered. Also described are compositions comprising N- (bromoacetyl) -3,3-dinitroazetidine (ABDNAZ).
