Adipononitrile is prepared by reacting 3-pentenenitrile with hydrogen cyanide. 3-pentenenitrile is prepared by reacting 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide. The catalyst for producing 3-pentenenitrile is recycled from the reaction of 1,3-butadiene with hydrogen cyanide. At least a portion of the recycled catalyst is purified by an extraction process that separates the catalytic decomposition product and a reaction product such as mononitrile having 9 carbon atoms from the catalyst. |
