abstract The scattered photon extraction luminaire includes an optical element having a first surface; A light source for emitting short wavelength radiation, disposed at right angles, or tangentially opposite the first surface of the optical element; A wavelength converting material disposed on the first surface of the optical element for receiving and downconverting at least a portion of the short wavelength radiation emitted by the light source and delivering back the received and downconverted radiation; And one or more reflectors disposed opposite the wavelength converting material. The scattered photon extraction illumination system includes a plurality of light emitting devices. In one embodiment of the invention one or more wavelength converting materials are disposed away from the light source and used to absorb radiation in one spectral region and emit radiation in another spectral region. The light efficiency is improved by capturing short wavelengths and down-converted radiation.
