titleOfInvention Methods and devices for conditioning metal surface scales
abstract The present invention relates to a method and system for treating oxide scale at the surface of a metal object. In one embodiment, the system 100 temperature control device 105 controls the temperature of the surface 112 of the metal object 106 to an application temperature lower than the Leidenfrost temperature point of the alkali metal hydroxide conditioning aqueous solution. The applicator 108 wets the surface of the metal object at conditioning temperature with a thin layer 111 of solution that binds to the oxide scale, and the heating device 113 is suitable but not excessive by melting the alkali metal hydroxide reacting with the oxide scale. The wet surface is heated to a final conditioning temperature above the melting point of the alkali metal hydroxide by means of an additional value selected to effect the conditioning of the oxide scale at a lower rate. The system terminates further conditioning to prevent the creation of additional oxide scale above the controlled depth.
