abstract Disclosed are methods for stabilizing and organizing collagen fibrils in the extracellular matrix of the retinal tissue, particularly the Brook membrane, and stabilizing the retinal pigment epithelial layer along the Brook membrane. Stabilization and organization can be achieved by treating retinal tissue with proteins that crosslink and organize collagen fibrils such as decorin. Stabilization and organization methods include disassembly of the Brooke membrane and retinal pigments along the Brooke membrane before, during or after diagnosis of early stages of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema before, during, or after diagnosis of dry macular degeneration. Treatment of retinal tissue to prevent, retard, or limit the progress of disassembly of epithelial cells.
