abstract |
Processes and plants are disclosed for obtaining acetic acid and methanol through hydrolysis of methyl acetate by reactive distillation. The reactive distillation column is configured as a split wall reactive distillation column (1). The feed containing water and methyl acetate is brought into contact with the catalyst in the reaction space 19 to effect hydrolysis of the water and methyl acetate to produce methanol and acetic acid. The reaction space comprises at least a first rectifying zone 32, a first stripping zone 34 and a first reaction zone 33. The catalyst is provided to the first reaction zone 33. The column further comprises a product space 29 having at least a second rectifying zone 42 and a second stripping zone 44. The second stripping zone 44 shares at least a portion of the column sump 38 with the first stripping zone 34. The first head product exits the reaction space head 45, the bottom product exits the column sump 38, the second head product exits the product space head 46, and the intermediate product exits the product space ( 29). |
