abstract The present invention provides a method for investigating neurogenesis, neuronal cell proliferation and differentiation. Specifically, the present invention relates to a method for identifying a pharmaceutical agent capable of regulating neurogenesis and neuronal proliferation, a method for screening genes for regulating neurogenesis and proliferation of neural progenitor cells, and methods of neurogenesis and neural proliferation or differentiation. It relates to methods of identifying pharmaceutical agents as candidate modulators. The invention also relates to methods of identifying pharmaceutical agents that characterize and regulate neurogenesis, pharmaceutical agents identified by such methods, methods of treating patients with such pharmaceutical agents, and compositions containing such pharmaceutical agents. The method of the present invention thus enables the description of the mechanisms controlling neurogenesis, brain development and function in healthy animals and in diseases of the nervous system. Furthermore, the methods of the present invention facilitate the development of compositions that prevent, ameliorate, or stabilize impaired neurogenesis in various neurological diseases, including cognitive disorders.
