abstract The present invention provides methods and apparatus for detecting, measuring or locating cells or substances present even at very low concentrations in vivo in a subject using targeted magnetic nanoparticles and special magnetic systems. Magnetic systems may include, for example, magnetic subsystems and sensor subsystems including SQUID sensors and atomic magnetometers. Magnetic systems can detect, measure or locate particles bound by antibodies to a cell or substance of a given type. Exemplary magnetic systems can detect the subnanogram amount of these nanoparticles.
