Aromatic compounds such as o-xylene are selectively nitrated with nitric acid in the presence of polyphosphoric acid and large pore acidic zeolites or large pore hydrophobic molecular sieves. This is an environmentally friendly and commercially feasible high conversion process for the selective nitration of aromatic compounds in the para position. |
