Soft porous materials are coated with a multilayer ceramic coating by physical vapor deposition. The coated material is suitable for use as cookware, particularly copper cookware products including pure copper substrates, base coatings and ceramic coatings. The base coating is deposited by the combination of sputtering and cathode arcs to provide good corrosion resistance and adhesion to the substrate. The ceramic coating includes a PVD nitride or carbide nitride layer and provides a non-chromic surface, good durability, and thermal stability. Coated copper cookware products have the same thermal conductivity, good corrosion resistance, high durability, excellent cookability and ease of cleaning as pure copper. Metal products having multilayer coatings and methods of making metal products are also described. |
