Hematopoietic Stem Cells and Methods of Treatment of Neovascular Eye Disease Using the Same |
abstract |
Bone marrow-derived isolated mammalian lineage negative hematopoietic stem cell population (Lin - HSC) contains endothelial progenitor cells (EPC) capable of forming blood vessels of the retina. At least about 50% of the cells in isolated Lin HSC populations contain cell surface markers for CD31 and c-kit. Up to about 8% of the cells may comprise Sca-1 cell markers, and up to about 4% of the cells may comprise Flk-1 / KDR markers. The isolated Lin HSC population of the present invention is useful for treating ocular vascular diseases. Also provided are isolated Lin HSC populations transfected with therapeutically useful genes, which are useful for delivering genes to the eye for cell line gene therapy. |
