abstract Flexible surgical instruments use sheaths around tendons that actuate end effectors or other mechanisms in the instrument. Liquid lubricant can be introduced to the sheath to reduce friction. The disclosed combination of tendons, sheaths, and lubricant compositions reduce friction to the appropriate level for the operation of minimally invasive instruments and are not harmful or toxic to the patient.
