abstract |
A crosslinking method for crosslinking polymer chains in a coating composition is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method uses the Hantzsch dihydropyridine reaction to crosslink the polymer resin chains having beta-keto ester functionality using an aldehyde source and an ammonia or primary amine source to cross between the beta-keto ester functionality. A reaction product is formed that includes forming permanent dihydropyridine bonds. The novel crosslinking reaction can be carried out at lower temperatures than typical crosslinking reactions and in neutral to mild alkaline aqueous solutions with a pH of 6-11. The novel crosslinking reaction offers many advantages in carrying out the crosslinking of the polymer chains in the coating resin. |
