abstract | Provided herein are novel polythiophene compounds with polyalkoxyl side chains and irreversible (IUA) thermochromic compounds / compositions thereof upon activation. The IUA thermochromic compound or composition is activated upon heating above the reversible thermochromic transition temperature (RTTT) and cooled to below the irreversible thermochromic transition temperature (IRTTT) in less than 2 seconds to exhibit an IUA color. The activated IUA thermochromic compounds or compositions will retain their IUA colors as long as the compounds or compositions are maintained at temperatures below approximately 5 ° C. below the IRTTT. The IUA thermochromic compounds / compositions can be used to prepare IUA thermochromic indicators that can monitor objects stored below a predetermined temperature and detect objects that have been exposed to temperatures above a predetermined temperature. |
