titleOfInvention | Coatings for Medical Devices with Antithrombogenic Conjugates |
abstract | Conjugates between antithrombotic agents and biodegradable polymers are provided. Also provided is a method of applying a coating comprising at least a portion of an implantable device to an implantable device to prevent or reduce the formation of thrombosis on the surface of the device. The first or sublayer of the coating is prepared by mixing a polymer material and a biologically active agent with a solvent to obtain a homogeneous solution. The second or outer layer comprises an antithrombotic heparin-bioabsorbable polymer conjugate. This coating can be applied to the inner drug containing layer using, for example, a dip coating or spray coating process. After drying, the antithrombotic heparin biodegradable polymer conjugate remains in the outer layer of the coating and allows the formulation to elute from the inner layer. In addition, the outermost layer prevents thrombosis and can control the release kinetics of the agent (s) contained within the inner layer (s) of the coating. |
