Compositions for removing airway biofilms are useful for the treatment of infections such as pneumonia caused by mycoplasma pneumoniae. In general, the composition comprises the following (1) and (2): (1) linking two monosaccharides in a polysaccharide in an amount sufficient to degrade the biofilm in the airway or linking a protein molecule and a monosaccharide in a glycoprotein. At least one enzyme catalyzing the hydrolysis of the bond; And (2) a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier suitable for administration into the airways. The composition may further comprise components such as steroids, lysozyme, lactoferrin, or peroxidase; If peroxidase is included, the composition may further comprise not only a substrate for the oxidase, but also an oxidase that generates a peroxide. The composition can be used in methods for treating infections based on the ability of the composition to dissolve biofilms in the airways. |
