The present invention relates to a sol containing silica-based particles having an axial ratio of about 10 or more and a specific surface area of 600 m 2 / g or more. The invention also relates to a sol containing silica-based particles having an axial ratio of about 10 or more and an S-value of about 35 or less. The invention also relates to a sol containing surface modified silica-based particles having an axial ratio of at least 10 and a specific surface area of at least about 400 m 2 / g. The present invention also relates to a sol having a viscosity of at least 50 cP and a silica content of at least about 3% by weight and containing silica based particles having a specific surface area of at least about 400 m 2 / g. The present invention also relates to a method for producing a sol containing silica-based particles according to the present invention, a sol containing silica-based particles obtained by the method, and a use as a flocculant of the sol containing the silica-based particles.
