titleOfInvention | Materials and methods for diagnosing and treating diseases related to oxidative stress |
abstract | The present invention relates to methods and materials for the prevention and treatment of disease states associated with oxidative stress or a threatening reducing environment, including inflammatory bowel disease such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. Another aspect of the invention relates to a composition formulated for enema administration. In one embodiment, a composition suitable for enema administration contains an effective amount of 5-ASA and steroids such as budesonide or hydrocortisone. The invention also relates to compositions formulated for oral administration. In one embodiment, the composition contains alpha-lipoic acid, and / or N-acetyl-L-cysteine (N-A-C), and / or L-glutamine. The alpha-lipoic acid can be racemic alpha-lipoic acid, R-lipoic acid, or R-dihydro-lipoic acid. The methods of the present invention comprise the administration of a composition or compound of the present invention. In one embodiment, a composition or compound of the invention is instilled rectally into a patient. In another embodiment, the compound or composition is administered orally. The present invention also relates to methods of screening to diagnose risks associated with oxidative stress, such as ulcerative colitis and other inflammatory bowel diseases, and / or to assess developmental risk. |
