The present invention provides a method of engineering a protein to optimize the performance of the protein under certain environmental conditions of interest. In some embodiments, the present invention provides a method of engineering an enzyme to optimize the catalytic activity of the enzyme under certain environmental conditions. In some preferred embodiments, the present invention provides a net surface charge of an enzyme (eg, metalloprotease or serine protease) to obtain variants that demonstrate improved performance in detergent formulations compared to starting or parent enzymes. And / or to alter the surface charge distribution. |
