abstract The present invention relates to a GSL8 protein for synthesizing callose, which is a constituent of a cell plate formed during cytoplasmic division of plant cells, wherein the protein is cytokinesis, cell patterning, and plastic of plant cells. It is involved in the regulation of plasmodesmata and plastid differentiation. The invention also relates to plant cells transformed with DNA encoding GSL8 protein and to transformed plants comprising the cells.
