abstract A technique for forming a black yttrium oxide thermal spray coating using a white Y 2 O 3 thermal spray powder material is proposed. This technique uses a white thermal spray Y 2 O 3 powder material as a plasma jet generating heat working gas, and plasma-sprays using a mixed gas in which hydrogen gas is added to an inert gas such as Ar and He, and then contained in a plasma heat source. The strong reducing action of the hydrogen atoms of the atoms is changed to black particles of Y 2 O 3 - x in which part of the oxygen of the Y 2 O 3 powder is lost, thereby forming a black yttrium oxide spray coating on the surface of the substrate.
