abstract In each case, the cylinder-specific lambda controller determines the controller value ZSLR that affects the air-fuel ratio of each cylinder according to the air-fuel ratio per cylinder measured for each cylinder. The controller value ZSLR is monitored to check whether a predetermined first threshold value ZSLR_THD1 has been reached, and indicates a deviation of the recorded cylinder-specific air-fuel ratio LAM_I assigned to each cylinder upon reaching the first threshold value. The lambda quality (CQ) is determined. The controller value is monitored to check whether a second predetermined threshold ZSLR_THD2 is reached that indicates a stronger control interference than the first threshold value ZSLR_THD1. When the second threshold is reached, a lambda quality value CQ is determined. A check is made to determine whether a lambda quality value CQ assigned to the first threshold value ZSLR_THD1 is less than a lambda quality value CQ assigned to the second threshold value ZSLR_THD2, and if so, an instability Control behavior (INSTAB) is diagnosed. If not, stable control behavior (STAB) is diagnosed.
