abstract Provided herein is a power saving scheme for nodes outside of network range. During the operation when the node determines that it is out of network range, it will switch to the "disconnected" mode of operation. In "disconnected" mode, the node will send messages at semi-random intervals (so that it will not continue to interfere with the beaconing network once it comes back into range), and then for a short period of time ( Time much shorter than the frame length). The sent message informs any node that receives it that the transmitted node is currently disconnected from the network and includes the MAC address of the disconnected node. The disconnect node will enter sleep mode after a short reception period.
