abstract The present invention discloses fuel additives for high-asphalten carbonaceous fuels such as residual fuel oil or coal. The fuel additives provide improved combustion characteristics. Such improved combustion characteristics include one or both of improved efficiency and reduced pollutant emissions. In particular, fuel additives include extracts from plants such as laver, alpeque or alfalfa, and optionally organometallic compounds. The use of fuel additives comprising both plant extracts and organometallic compounds is particularly useful for improving the combustion characteristics of fuels with high asphaltene content.
