abstract | The present invention provides a multifunctional composition for incorporation into a coagulated composite. This composition is formulated as an additive to control the density of the composite and to increase the rate of curing or strength development of the material. The composition of the additive generally includes an alkaline activating compound, such as sodium silicate, and a modified low density siliceous material having at least one region morphologically modified by the compound, such as a partially digested region. The additives may be in slurry form, in powder form or in aggregated particle form. Additives can be prepared using a two-step method of reducing the particle size of the siliceous material, mixing it with the alkali compound in solution and then digesting it in an atmospheric or pressurized vessel. In some embodiments, the solution may be powder dried to form aggregated particles containing alkaline activating compounds and low density siliceous particles having one or more partially digested regions. |
