abstract | The present invention relates to thrombin compositions with reduced high molecular weight impurity levels. In particular, the levels of factor Va, prion and / or viral pathogens were significantly reduced. The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of thrombin, which generally has a high degree of purity and a high specific activity. More specifically, the present invention includes the step of evicting high molecular weight impurities from thrombin formulations by size eviction filtration. In another embodiment the preparation of thrombin further comprises an ion exchange filtration step. The process of the invention is particularly suitable for large scale purification of thrombin. The present invention also generally relates to stabilized formulations containing thrombin compositions. More specifically, the present invention also relates to stabilized liquid formulations containing thrombin having a high degree of purity and high inertness and methods of making such formulations. |
