titleOfInvention | Use of plasmin to prevent or slow the progression of non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy and to treat other eye conditions |
abstract | The present invention provides intravitreal administration of an effective amount of a serine proteolytic enzyme sufficient to prevent or reduce the progression of proliferative diabetic retinopathy in a patient with non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy by forming posterior vitreous detachment without surgery. Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy, including, prevents or slows the progression of the proliferative form of diabetic retinopathy. Patients suffering from one or more of the above conditions have an effective amount of serine proteolytic enzymes for reducing or treating certain ocular conditions of retinal ischemia, retinal inflammation, retinal edema, tractional retinal detachment, tractional retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage, and tractional maculopathy Non-surgical methods of treating ocular conditions such as retinal ischemia, retinal inflammation, retinal edema, tractional retinal detachment, tractional retinopathy, vitreous hemorrhage, and tractional maculopathy by intravitreal administration are also disclosed. Plasmin, microplasmin and miniplasmin are preferred serine proteolytic enzymes, with plasmin being most preferred. |
