titleOfInvention | Critical Phase Alkylation Process |
abstract | The present invention relates to a process for the production of ethylbenzene by ethylation of critical benzene in a reaction zone containing a molecular sieve aromatic alkylation catalyst comprising cerium-promoted zeolite beta. Polyethylbenzene is fed into the reaction zone and brought into contact with cerium-promoted zeolite beta having a silica / alumina molar ratio in the range of 20-500. The reaction zone is operated at temperature and pressure conditions where benzene is supercritical to cause ethylation of benzene and transalkylation of polyethylbenzene and benzene in the presence of zeolite beta catalyst. The alkylation product is produced by containing ethylbenzene as the main product by adjunct production of heavier alkylation byproducts of up to 60% by weight ethylbenzene. The alkylation reaction zone is operated under conditions that provide a composite by-product yield of propylbenzene and butyl benzene relative to ethylbenzene, which is less than one-half of the by-product of the corresponding yield for zeolite beta promoted by lanthanum. The production of ethylbenzene in the critical alkylation reaction zone is involved by recycling the polyalkylated aromatic components of the reaction product back to the reaction zone. |
