abstract | A new liquid crystal display device is disclosed. The apparatus includes a pair of substrates disposed opposite to each other and having an electrode over one or more substrates and the nematic liquid crystal material sandwiched between the pair of substrates and wherein the molecules of the nematic liquid crystal material in the black state are separated from the pair of molecules. A liquid crystal cell comprising a liquid crystal layer oriented almost perpendicular to the substrate surface; First and second polarizing films disposed such that the liquid crystal cell is disposed therebetween; And at least two optically anisotropic films, each comprising an optically anisotropic film disposed between the liquid crystal layer and the first and second polarizing films.n n n Herein, the thickness of the liquid crystal layer is d (nm), the refractive index anisotropy at wavelength λ of the liquid crystal layer is Δn (λ), and the in-plane retardation at wavelength λ of the optical compensation film is Re (λ). Assume that the following relations (I) to (VI) are satisfied at two or more different wavelengths in the wavelength range of 380 nm to 780 nm: (I) 200 ≦ Δn (λ) × d ≦ 1000; (II) Rth (λ) / λ = A × Δn (λ) × d / λ + B; (III) Re (λ) / λ = C × λ / {Δn (λ) × d} + D; And (IV) 0.488 ≦ A ≦ 0.56, B = −0.0567, −0.041 ≦ C ≦ 0.016; And D = 0.0939. |
