abstract | The present invention relates to large boron hydride clusters, such as the formula B n H m It provides a new method for synthesizing boron hydride molecules of (where 5 ≦ n ≦ 96 and m ≦ n + 8, where m and n satisfy the electron counting rule of the macropolyhedral borane). The present invention is particularly useful for the synthesis of octadecaborane (B 18 H 22 ). Preferred methods of the invention are repeatedly produced under the condition of producing a conjugate acid from a salt of a [B a H b ] c- or [B n +2 H m -4 ] 2- anion followed by concentrating and drying the acid. Borane B n Hm and providing a residual salt of [B a H b ] c- or [B n +2 H m -4 ] 2- anion which is reused in the synthesis process. The present invention also provides isotopically enriched boranes, in particular isotope enriched 10 B 18 H 22 and 11 B 18 H 22 . |
