The present invention provides a process for the selective oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes or ketones with molecular oxygen using a catalyst based on TEMPO, an Fe-bipyridyl or Fe-phenanthroline promoter and an N-bromosuccinimide promoter in an acetic acid solvent. It is about. Oxidation takes place at temperatures ranging from 45-50 ° C. and oxygen or air pressures of 0-15 psi at high rates and high aldehyde selectivity. 95-100% alcohol conversion and greater than 95% aldehyde selectivity are achieved for a reaction time of 3-4 hours. Aldehydes such as 3,3-dimethyl-1-butanal can be produced efficiently using the present invention. |
