abstract The present invention discloses an improved methanol carbonylation process for producing acetic acid. Specifically, (a) distilling at least a portion of the condensed light end overhead to produce a permanganate reducing compound (PRC) rich second overhead stream, and (b) extracting the second overhead stream with water. And separating therefrom the aqueous stream containing PRC, and (c) returning at least a portion of the extracted second overhead to a second still, a method for removing PRC from the condensed light end overhead stream.
