abstract | Flexible foil movable by light includes dyes that can change shape when absorbing light of a predetermined wavelength. The dye is dispersed in the foil such that the dye is anisotropically oriented near one major surface of the foil. Across the foil, the concentration and / or orientation of the dye changes in an asymmetrical manner. When exposed to light of a predetermined wavelength, the change in orientation and / or concentration is what causes the flexible foil to move. When exposed, the dye changes shape due to a change in the concentration and / or orientation of the dye resulting in a change in shape that causes a change in the lateral dimension of the foil and the other foil at different locations. This causes the flexible foil to move or more particularly bend. In a particular embodiment the movement is reversible. |
