titleOfInvention Drug test system with bio-artificial liver
abstract The present invention relates to a drug test system 10 using the liver piece culture apparatus 14. The device retains a chamber with plasma and gas valves 17, an animal liver piece 15 securely placed in the chamber to maximize the surface area of the animal liver piece exposed to the culture medium 13. The plasma is supplied to the chamber so that it rises to contact the liver fragments and is alternately removed from contact with the liver fragments, and gas is supplied to the top of the chamber. The system also includes a reservoir 12 for containing media entering and exiting the chamber. The present invention also provides a method for assessing the toxicity of a drug or drug candidate.
