titleOfInvention Top mounted spine fixtures and instruments for mounting and handling them
abstract An elongated spinal cord rod comprising a bone fastener having a head portion with a pair of sidewalls connected to a bottom end forming an elongated U-shaped channel having an upper end, a lower end and an upper opening positioned at the first longitudinal axis and the upper end. System for introducing. The upper opening and the channel further define a passageway configured to receive the spinal cord rod, each sidewall further defining a first end face and a second end face, the second end face opposing the first end face. The bone engagement element extends from the lower end of the head portion to secure the bone fastener to the bone. The system further includes a tool for introducing the rod into the U-shaped channel. The tool includes a first member having a distal end and a proximal end. The distal end is configured to guide the rod through the passageway to introduce the rod through the upper opening into the U-shaped channel. The second member forms a second longitudinal axis that is substantially perpendicular to the first longitudinal axis. The second member has a first end and a second end, the second end being positioned so that the second member is disposed outside the passageway of the spinal cord rod and preferably so as not to interfere with the upper opening or to block access to the opening. It has a pair of jaws for securing to one of the side walls of the head portion of the bone fastener. The first member is pivotable relative to the second member, in a direction parallel to the second longitudinal axis between the first and second ends of the second member along the second longitudinal axis to introduce the spinal cord rod through the upper opening into the passageway. In order to be able to translate linearly, the first member is operatively coupled with the second member.
