The present invention relates to an implantable medical device for treating a patient. The implantable device may be an orthopedic device, such as a spinal cord implant, including but not limited to a disc or nucleolar prosthesis, spinal cord rod assembly, or bone fixation plate. The orthopedic device may be formed to include a metal matrix composite that provides improved wear and diagnostic imaging techniques. In another form, the present invention provides an implantable medical device comprising a porous metal matrix composite capable of delivering a therapeutic composition to a patient. In still another aspect, the present invention provides an implantable electrode device or inductive portion formed to include a metal matrix composite that provides low polarization and contact impedance and enables enhanced physiological signal sensing. |
