abstract |
Modified starch compositions are prepared by combining starch with a polymer and cooking the combined starch and polymer composition under acidic conditions, whereby the cooking produces anionic groups on the polymer. Another modified starch composition is prepared by cooking starch, combining the cooked starch with the cooked polymer, which produces anionic groups on the polymer, which are cooked separately from the starch. The composition can be used as a cleaning aid to remove solids and other suspending materials from aqueous dispersions, and in particular as a retention agent in paper making. |
