abstract In the method for producing hydroxybenzoic acid comprising the step of preparing an alkali metal salt of phenol from phenols and then reacting it with carbon dioxide, the step of preparing an alkali metal salt of phenols from phenols includes hydroxy including the following steps. Provided are methods for preparing benzoic acids:n n n a) a step of reacting an excess amount of phenols with an alkali metal alkoxide and an alkali metal alkoxide to prepare an alkali metal salt of phenols, andn n n b) distilling off the alcohol produced at the same time as step a).n n n According to the method of the present invention, hydroxybenzoic acids can be produced in high yield without using an aprotic polar organic solvent.
