Microwave energized plasma lamp with dielectric waveguide |
abstract |
A plasma lamp having a waveguide body substantially containing at least one solid dielectric material. The body is coupled to the microwave source and resonates in at least one resonant mode. The at least one lamp chamber integrally formed with the main body includes a bulb filled with a filler for receiving electric power from the resonating main body to form a light emitting plasma. The bulb may be self-shaped or may be an outer envelope that is sealed by a window or lens that covers the opening of the chamber. In order to reduce the power reflected from the main body and returned to the source, the source operates under the following conditions. a) when the source operates at a frequency that causes the body to resonate in a single mode, or b) a first frequency that causes the body to resonate in a relatively higher order mode before plasma is formed, and the plasma is brought to a steady state. Then, when the source operates at a second frequency that causes the body to resonate in a mode of relatively low order. |
