titleOfInvention | Sox trap for enhancing nox trap performance and methods of making and using the same |
abstract | The present invention relates to methods and catalyst composites useful for reducing contaminants in exhaust gas streams containing sulfur oxide contaminants. The method of removing nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide contaminants from a gas stream includes providing a catalyst composite having a downstream portion and an upstream portion. The downstream portion includes a first support, a first platinum component, and a nitrogen oxide absorbent component. The upstream portion includes a second support, a second platinum component, and a sulfur oxide absorbent component selected from the group consisting of oxides of Mg, Sr, and Ba. In the absorption cycle, a lean gas stream comprising nitrogen oxides and sulfur oxides passes through the upstream portion to absorb at least some sulfur oxide contaminants. The downstream portion absorbs and reduces nitrogen oxides in the gas stream. In the desorption cycle of the sulfur oxides, the temperature of the gas stream rises within the desorption temperature range, thereby desorbing and reducing the sulfur oxide contaminants in at least some upstream portion. The desorption temperature range is high enough that the sulfur oxide contaminants are not substantially absorbed in the downstream portion. In the desorption cycle of nitrogen oxides, the exhaust gas is converted from the lean stream to the rich stream to desorb and reduce at least some nitrogen oxide contaminants from the downstream portion. |
