abstract The absorbent article includes a fluid permeable topsheet, a fluid impermeable backsheet and a hygroscopic treatment agent. The hygroscopic treatment agent is protected from liquid contact under the conditions of use and the relative humidity in the product is reduced by reducing the water vapor present in the absorbent product environment. As a result, the absorbent product exhibits a substantially reduced degree of skin hydration of the wearer's skin in use, making the skin less susceptible to microbial growth. The absorbent article may also include a ventilation layer between the absorber and the backsheet and / or a surge control layer between the absorber and the topsheet.
