| abstract | The present invention provides a backlight unit including a front substrate and a rear substrate spaced apart from each other at predetermined intervals, and a phosphor that is applied to a plurality of discharge spaces formed between the front substrate and the rear substrate to emit light toward the front substrate. As the front substrate, there is provided a backlight unit having a function of diffusing light emitted from the phosphor and a liquid crystal display device employing the same, whereby the backlight unit can be enlarged and thinned while maintaining high brightness and uniformity of brightness.
