abstract The present invention provides a backlight unit including a front substrate and a rear substrate spaced apart from each other at predetermined intervals, and a phosphor that is applied to a plurality of discharge spaces formed between the front substrate and the rear substrate to emit light toward the front substrate. As the front substrate, there is provided a backlight unit having a function of diffusing light emitted from the phosphor and a liquid crystal display device employing the same, whereby the backlight unit can be enlarged and thinned while maintaining high brightness and uniformity of brightness. The liquid crystal display device adopted can be obtained.
