abstract The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for driving a plasma display panel for performing automatic power control based on an average signal level corrected in consideration of a difference in power consumption in each of red, green, and blue discharge cells. In the method of driving a plasma display panel according to the present invention, a plurality of subfields are processed, which are divided into frame units by processing an image signal composed of a combination of red, green, and blue input from the outside, and each frame has a gray scale weight. The gray scale display is performed on the plasma display panel by dividing the data into three groups. The load rate, which is the ratio of the discharge cells that are turned on with respect to the number of all discharge cells, is predicted in each frame unit, and the number of discharges in each frame is inversely proportional to the estimated load rate.
