Absorbent binder composition, method of making it, and articles incorporating it |
abstract |
An absorbent binder composition is provided having a natural crosslinking capacity after application to a substrate at a temperature of about 120 ° C. or less. The absorbent binder composition comprises an acrylate or methacrylate ester or trialkoxy silane functional group comprising a monoethylenically unsaturated polymer such as carboxylic acid, sulfonic acid or phosphoric acid or a salt thereof, or a quaternary ammonium salt, and an alkoxysilane functional group. Monomers copolymerizable with water to subsequently react with water to form silanol groups. Absorbent binder compositions are particularly suitable for use in the manufacture of a wide variety of absorbent articles. The process for preparing the absorbent binder composition includes preparing a monomer solution, adding the monomer solution to an initiator solution that may also include monomers, and activating the polymerization initiator in the initiator solution. Also provided is a flexible absorbent binder composition having natural crosslinking capacity after application to a substrate at a temperature of about 120 ° C. or less. The flexible absorbent binder composition has about 15 to about 99.8 mass% of monoethylenically unsaturated polymer units, about 0.1 to about 20 mass% of polyacrylate ester units having alkoxysilane functionality and about 0.1 selected from polyolefin glycols and polyolefin oxides. To about 75 mass% of polymer units. The flexible absorbent binder composition can be prepared using a template polymerization method in which the preformed polyolefin glycol or polyolefin oxide functions as a template polymer. |
